Glossodynia – Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)

Abstract:

Glossodynia commonly known as Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, idiopathic condition characterized by a persistent burning sensation in the tongue/oral mucosa without any clinically visible abnormalities. It primarily affects the middle age and elderly individuals, with a higher prevalence in postmenopausal women. The exact etiology of BMS is unclear with potential contributions from neuropathic, hormonal, psychological and salivary gland dysfunction factors.

Diagnosis is challenging due to lack of specific biomarkers making it diagnosis of exclusion. Treatment is symptomatic and multidisciplinary including Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.

This webinar aims to provide in depth understanding of BMS, covering its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis criteria and current treatment strategies helping participants to improve patient management and quality of life.

Introduction:

Burning mouth syndrome is also known as Glossodynia, Glossopyrosis, Stomatodynia, or oral dysesthesia. It has been recognized as chronic pain which affects 2.6 percent of the general population.

Glossodynia is characterized by intra oral pain disorder with burning sensation in the tongue, gingivae, lips or denture bearing area. The burning may be unilateral or bilateral in the oral cavity accompanied by xerostomia, dysgeusia, despite normal clinical and laboratory findings. The condition significantly affects patients’ quality of life causing discomfort and anxiety due to persistent pain of unknown etiology. Although the exact mechanism of underlying cause is not clear, but research suggests a combination of peripheral and central nervous nervous system alterations, salivary gland dysfunction, hormonal and psychological factors Challenging due to lack of specific biomarkers.

Treatment is often symptomatic and multidisciplinary including pharmacological and non-pharmacology approaches. This webinar will explore the latest insights into BMS, providing participants with evidence -base approaches for diagnosis, differential diagnosis and effective treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the pathophysiology and epidemiology of BMS.
  2. Identify clinical features and diagnostic criteria.
  3. Review differential diagnosis.
  4. Develop multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  5. Apply evidence base treatment.
