Abstract:

Sports dentistry plays a crucial role in athlete safety, performance optimization, and injury prevention. This lecture will explore the latest advancements in sports dentistry, including digital occlusal analysis, mouthguard innovations, and interdisciplinary collaborations with sports medicine. Emphasizing evidence-based practices, the session will discuss trauma management, performance-enhancing dental interventions, and the impact of oral health on athletic performance. Attendees will gain insights into cutting-edge research, clinical applications, and the future of sports dentistry in both amateur and professional sports.

Introduction:

Athletes are at significant risk for orofacial injuries, which can impact their performance and overall health. Sports dentistry integrates digital technology, preventive strategies, and therapeutic interventions to protect and enhance athlete well-being. This lecture provides an overview of the field, focusing on the three pillars of sports dentistry: trauma prevention, performance optimization, and overall athlete health.

Prevention is key in reducing sports-related dental injuries. Customized mouthguards, occlusal assessments, and airway management are essential strategies. Additionally, the impact of dental conditions such as bruxism and temporomandibular disorders on sports performance will be explored.

The session will highlight interdisciplinary collaborations between sports dentists, physicians, and performance specialists. Digital tools such as occlusal analysis and AI-driven diagnostics are transforming athlete care. This lecture will equip dental professionals with knowledge and techniques to implement sports dentistry effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the role of sports dentistry in athlete injury prevention and performance enhancement.
  2. Analyze the impact of occlusal forces and temporomandibular joint disorders on athletic performance.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of digital occlusal analysis and AI integration in sports dentistry.
  4. Demonstrate proper mouthguard selection, fabrication, and customization for different sports.
